The Quetzaltenango Region: The city of Quetzaltenango is situated in the western highlands, and is the second largest city of Guatemala. It is often referred to as Xelaju (Shaylahu), or simply as Xela, and at an altitude of 2330 meters above sea level its climate is quite moderate. It has a population of about 137,000 and is a major center for local culture, costumes, languages and traditions as well as being situated in lovely mountainous terrain. The entire province has a population of about 690,000 distributed among many colourful towns and villages. |
