Santa Maria Volcano: Having an altitude of 3772 meters, it dominates the valley in which Xela is situated. It is a strenuous climb of about 3 hours followed by a 2-hour descent. From the summit, best reached at sunrise, you look out over the entire line of volcanos in Guatemala, from Tacana on the Mexican border, to Tajumulco, Lacandon, Chicabal, Siete Orejas, Santiaguito (an active volcano), Santo Tomas, Zunil, San Pedro, Atitlan, Toliman, Agua, Fuego and Acatenango.

Laguna de Chicabal
Lake Chicabal: has an altitude of 2900 meters and can be reached by a moderate 2-hour hike followed by a 1.5 hour return trip. It is located inside the volcanic crater of Chicabal, and is an ecological reserve in addition to being a sacred site for the Mayan people. The first week in May of each year is reserved for their ceremonies.

Santiaguito Lookout: is a fairly easy hike to an altitude of 2500 meters with a total walking time of 1.5 to 2 hours each way, and a stopover of an hour for lunch at the lookout. Santiaguito is the most active volcano in Guatemala. It erupts about every hour, so your chances of catching 2 eruptions are good.

From the summit of Tajumulco
Tajumulco Volcano: is the highest volcano
in Central America, having an altitude of 4220 meters above sea level. It is usually visited over two days and one night, the ascent taking 3 hours and the descent 2 hours, approximately. From the summit is it possible to see the city of Tapachula in Mexico, the Pacific Ocean, and the entire line of volcanos of Guatemala, as well as the Cuchamatanes Range in the neighboring Huehuetenango district.

Tacana Volcano: is the second-highest volcano in Central America at an altitude of 4093 meters. It is a challenging climb, 7 hours up and 4 down. It is close to the Mexico-Guatemala border and from its summit there are impressive vistas into both countries.
